1920’s Hairstyles

The roaring 20s was one that included a change in culture as well as a push into modern culture.  Those during this time were able to reflect different cultural movements through different forms of expression, specifically with the 1920’s hairstyles.  The different styles that began to push forward during this time included specific sets of class and style that were divided into several subcultures of the time, which created new expressions of culture.

For men, the 1920’s hairstyles were based on trying to become more youthful.  Popular styles included thicker hair that was straightened and parted to one side.  This youthful approach would also sometimes include hair that was combed straight back.  Most of the hair that was a part of this era for men was kept shorter and had a clean cut that was cared for continuously.  During this time, the beard and mustache trend began to disappear to keep this same youthful look.

The 1920’s hairstyles for women also had a youthful approach for the roaring 20s culture.  This was divided into two main cultures, one that included women who were interested in a freer look and others who kept a more feminine approach.  For instance, flapper women were defined by a look that made a statement of freedom.  This was done with hair that was often worn down or would be curled loosely to fit the fashion of the time.  Women that were looking for a more feminine look would finger wave their hair with a shorter look or would look into more formal looks with up dos that were curled and refined for specific occasions.

The roaring 20s was one that included a change in the culture of the time into new concepts of freedom.  Within this specific ideal were 1920’s hairstyles that continued to define the specific looks of those that were working toward a new expression for this era.  From political changes to new innovations and into a culture that desired youth, were different definitions of hair that reflected the overall movement of culture.
